Innovation Cutting Scope 1 Emissions While Delivering a Better-Than-Cost-Neutral Return Advanced Hydrogen Technology, in partnership with K2C Rail, RSK-1stinrail, DB-ESG, and HNRC-Swietelsky, has led a breakthrough sustainability initiative targeting one of the rail industry's toughest challenges: reducing Scope 1 emissions from internal combustion engines across locomotives, tampers, road-rail, and road fleet vehicles. At the heart of this initiative is the Engine Carbon Clean (ECC) system, a hydrogen-powered, mobile cleaning solution that removes harmful carbon build-up in engines. The process, which takes 45-mins, requires no dismantling of engine parts and avoids any use of chemicals, ensuring both operational efficiency and environmental safety. Measurable Impact The ECC technology has undergone extensive real-world deployment and independent testing: • HNRC Swietelsky fitted the R4-hydrogen generator to a Class 08 locomotive, tested by ATMO at BCIMO. Over 12 months, it delivered a 30%+ reduction in CO, and a 30% improvement in fuel efficiency at idle, with uninterrupted operation across 15 months. This pioneering work was featured on BBC Documentary Click's "Arctic Series". • RSK-1stinrail integrated ECC into their road fleet, supporting TfL operations, cutting CO, emissions by 33%, equivalent to 6.1 tonnes saved annually per vehicle, while maintaining cost neutrality and reducing engine maintenance needs. • A current 8-week trial with a major UK tier 1, started in August, has already achieved 13% CO, and fuel reductions after just three cleans on their tamper • DB ESG has partnered with 2 Major UK Train Operators/Providers to validate ECC across mainline units, including Class 150s, with ongoing independent testing at MIRA. • The technology has now been validated through three independent testing bodies, Millbrook, BCIMO, and MIRA, confirming significant reductions in CO,, CO, NOx, NO, THC, and Particulate Matter, while improving engine performance. Importantly, ECC-treated vehicles have shown improved reliability and reduced maintenance demands when compared to untreated sister units, proving the technology's broader operational value. When fitted with the optional carbon capture device, ECC doesn't just reduce emissions, it actively captures carbon particulates. This opens opportunities for a circular economy approach, where captured carbon can be reused in the production of fertilisers, plastics, and even synthetic fuels, extending sustainability benefits beyond rail and into wider industry To put the impact in perspective: for just RSK and a UK Tier 1 we are working with, having adopted ECC and achieved a conservative 20% reduction in diesel use, they will cut nearly 39,000 tonnes of CO, annually, equivalent to planting over 1.7m trees every year. Strategic Sustainability Vision Through our engagement with the rail supply chain, we recognise that internal combustion engines are likely to remain in service until at least 2055, even as the industry transitions to hydrogen and electrification. With AHT's ECC system, we offer a practical solution to make these engines as clean as possible now. As perfectly summarised on the BBC, "the ultimate aim is to remove carbon emissions from our railway altogether, but while technology catches up, using AHT-ECC, powered by the most abundant element on Earth, might just be making the air we breathe cleaner https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0...
